Women in leadership: Building democratic ideals for progress

Empowering women to play an active role in political and social decisions.

Acção de Solidariedade e Desenvolvimento (ASD), through the project Trabalhar Junto Para o Progresso do Município (Working Together for the Progress of the Municipality), as part of the PASCAL grants, held the Ovakai Vaenda (Women Walking) conference in the municipality of Lubango, an important milestone for discussing the challenges and opportunities of women’s leadership in a democratic state governed by the rule of law. With the support of PASCAL, the event focused on promoting the active participation of women in decision-making processes, contributing to a more inclusive and just society.

The conference was attended by 49 participants, 44 of them women, representing various entities, including the Municipal Police Command, the Municipal Directorate of Education, the Humpata Municipal Delegation for Justice and Human Rights, and various civil society organizations.

The event was opened by Dr. Luísa Varo Kaputo, Provincial Director of the Social Action, Family and Gender Equality Office, who highlighted the importance of female leadership in strengthening democracy and economic and social development. During the meeting, Dr. Aida Neusa Gomes Nelson António, Independent Consultant, led the conference, stimulating discussions and reflections on the role of women in decision-making.

With a dynamic and inclusive approach, the participants worked in groups, addressing challenges and solutions for the involvement of women in local and national politics. The event was a reflection of PASCAL and ASD‘s ongoing mission to promote women’s active participation and ensure the advancement of democracy and gender equality in Angola.
